Boost Your Income

There are scores of legit ways to add to your income, whether selling stuff, working from home or going online. After all, no matter how good a MoneySaver you are, a bit more money's always useful.

Make your money work harder

1.   Give yourself a 25% pay rise

25% pay rise
There's nowt more powerful than sorting out your own finances.

By shifting to the best deal on every product, you can give yourself a 25% pay rise, without cutting back. Before anything else, this is the most important starting point.

How much? The average UK family could gain £2,500 to £5,000 a year doing this.

How do I do it? Use the step-by-step Money Makeover guide.

 2. Make your credit card pay you

Cashback credit cards pay you back a proportion of what you spend each time you use them.

Set up a direct debit to pay the card off in full each month, so there's no interest cost, and you can earn £100s/year. Just use the card for all your normal spending.

How much? The top cards pay 5% cashback for the first three months.

How do I do it? For updated best buys, see the Top Cashback Cards guide.

3.   Don't accept pitiful savings rates

Make sure you're getting the most out of your savings. Too many people leave their savings in pitiful high street bank accounts where former best buy rates have dropped massively.

Even worse, you may have it in a current account earning just 0.1%. Stop! Five minutes' work will let you increase the interest massively.

How much? For every £5,000 you have in a top easy access savings account, you could earn over £100 a year more than in a poor account – potentially much more if you're able to tuck it away for a couple of years.

How do I do it? See Top Savings Accounts, Starting Saving and Best Bank Accounts.

4. Free £150+ for switching to a better bank account

There's fierce competition in the banking market, so much so, some bribe you to switch - often with as much as £150. As often these are best-buys anyway, take it and smile.

See Best Bank Accounts for a full guide on how to switch accounts, what the best deals are and what sort of account is right for you.

5.    Pay off debts with savings

Most people who try to save while they're in debt are simply throwing their money away.

The amount you pay in interest to borrow is much more than you earn on your savings, so pay the debt off with savings and you're quids in.

Always pay off debts with savings

How much? Someone with £5,000 on a credit card and £5,000 saved is likely to be around £800 a year better off by paying off the debt with the savings.

Find out more: See the full Should I Pay Off My Debts?, Should I Pay Off My Student Loan? and Should I Overpay My Mortgage? guides.

6.  Get the benefits you're entitled to

There's a plethora of benefits available – the key is working out whether you're entitled to them.

The rather nifty tool from benefits specialists Entitledto in our Benefits Checkup guide does the work for you.

For more, read the Benefits Check-up, Pension Boosting and Childcare Costs guides.

7. Use your credit rating to stooze

Many credit card companies are willing to lend you money at 0% interest, so why not use this cash for everyday spending, replacing all other credit and debit card spending?

This means you'll now have debts on your 0% card (make sure you make the min repayment each month) and a similar amount in your current account, which you can save in an ISA or high interest savings account.

Pay off the full balance before the 0% ends, having earned interest on the money saved. This is known as stoozing. It's legal and can be profitable, yet it's only for the really financially-savvy.

For a full how-to, see the step-by-step Stoozing: Make Free Cash guide.

New York schoolboy 'made $72million trading stocks on his lunch breaks'

- and now takes his friends out to dine on $400 caviar, drives a BMW and has definitely made his immigrant parents proud

  • Mohammed Islam, 17, started dabbling in penny stocks at the age of nine

  • He trades stocks on lunch breaks at New York's Stuyvesant High School

  • Has made 8-figures trading -  rumored to be as much as $72million

  • Has bought BMW and Manhattan apartment

  • He cites his inspiration as billionaire hedge-funder Paul Tudor Jones, 60

  • Mohammed's parents are immigrants from Bengal region of South Asia

  • Student hopes to start hedge fund next year and make $1bn with friends

  • On his Instagram profile, he has written: 'More money, less problems'

He has not yet reached his 18th birthday.
But Mohammed Islam, from Queens, New York, has already made a fortune estimated at as much as $72million - from trading stocks on his lunch breaks at school, according to New York magazine's Monday issue.

The 17-year-old, who started dabbling in penny stocks at the tender age of nine, spends most of his breaks at Stuyvesant High School trading oil and gold futures, and small to mid-cap equities.

Not a multi-millionaire: Surrounded by his PR and legal entourage, Mohammed told the New York Observer that not only was his supposed $72million fortune false, but he has never made any money in the stock market

Coming clean: After the magazine ran the interview and his story made international headlines, the student (left) quickly backtracked, hiring a pricey crisis PR firm and battle-tested attorneys to spread the word
Life of luxury: Outside of school, Mohammed (left, in an Instagram shot) often takes his friends out to dine at Morimoto on 10th Avenue, where they feast on $400 caviar, expensive dishes and fresh-squeezed apple juice

Outside of school, he often takes his friends out to dine at Morimoto on 10th Avenue, where they feast on $400 caviar, expensive dishes and freshly-squeezed apple juice.

During an interview for the magazine's 10th annual 'Reasons to Love New York issue', Mohammed refused to disclose his exact net worth, but he admitted it was in 'the high eight figures' and provided bank and financial paperwork to back that up.

The successful teenager revealed he had used his incredible wealth to purchase a BMW - which he does not yet have a license to drive - and rent a Manhattan apartment.

However, his parents, who are immigrants from the Bengal region of South Asia, will not yet allow him to move out of their family home in Queens, according to the New York Post

Mohammed has also taken to social media to show off his well-funded, lavish lifestyle - regularly posting videos of him partying, playing poker and dancing with numerous women on Instagram.

His hard-earned cash has certainly been beneficial to his parents. 'My dad doesn't work now and I tend to help out with things, and futures gives me that incentive,' said the student.

But despite its advantages, Mr and Mrs Islam are not overly keen on their son's interest in trading.

'My dad doesn't like [finance] that much,' Mohammed, who has written the phrase, 'More money, less problems', on his Instagram profile, said in an ISSUU interview.

'He says he is ok with me trading, but my mom is skeptical about the market. But they see it as, if I am good at it, then why not?'

If money is not flowing, if businesses don’t keep going, there’s no innovation, no products, no investments, no growth, no jobs
   Mohammed Islam

A year after he started experimenting with penny stocks, Mohammed was introduced to further financial markets by his cousin. He has since developed a 'life-long passion' for trading.

'What makes the world go round? Money,' he said. 'If money is not flowing, if businesses don’t keep going, there’s no innovation, no products, no investments, no growth, no jobs.'

On his LinkedIn profile, the student said he rose to success while trading stocks during his lunch breaks because he 'followed the market, hunted for opportunities and used everything from fundamental analysis to technical analysis and price action to speculate in the markets'.

After having high returns in penny stocks, he moved on to small-mid cap equities, then derivatives, before feeling out the futures market and specializing in oil and gold, he said.

He added he has now developed 'a passion for understanding the markets and a passion for making money', and trades 'mainly based on volatility and volume'.

Speech: Speaking of his passion for trading stocks, Mohammed (pictured giving a speech), who trades 'mainly based on the volatility and volume' of gold and oil, said: 'What makes the world go round? Money'

During his interview with New York magazine's, Mohammed revealed his biggest inspiration in the finance world has been Paul Tudor Jones.

Jones, 60, the billionaire founder of Tudor Investment Corporation, a private asset management firm and hedge fund, ranks as the 108th-richest American, according to Forbes.

Mohammed said that while he had been 'paralyzed' by his losses when he first started trading, he quickly learned from Connecticut-based Jones's ability to get back into the game again and again.

'I had been paralyzed by my loss,' he said. 'But [Jones] was able to go back to it, even after losing thousands of dollars over and over.'

Speaking to Business Insider, he added: 'Jones’s personality and technique are what make him so successful and I aspire to become even one per cent of the man he is.

'He went through obstacles, yet still came out on top'

And despite his massive fortune, Mohammed has no plans to give up trading just yet.

The teenager said he and his trader friends hope to start a hedge fund in June - when he is old enough to get his broker-dealer license - and intend to make a billion dollars by next year.
This, of course, will all be done while attending college.

'It’s not just about the money,' said Mohammed, whose ultimate goal is to pave a path in the financial industry that will enable him to become a reputable hedge fund manager.

'We want to create a brotherhood. Like, all of us who are connected, who are in something together, who have influence.'

The 12 websites below have been chosen due to their high royalty rates, their popularity, or simply because they offer something different. Each could provide an additional income stream for anyone with enough good shots lying around.

If you would like to add any other websites to this list, please provide a link in the comments at the end of the article.

Alamy

Selling Photos 1
There’s a reason why Alamy has over 60 million images and videos for sale on its website. It’s because it offers photographers a huge 50% royalty payment on each photo sold. The site also allows photographers to sell their photos elsewhere (it doesn’t demand exclusivity.
This has enabled Alamy to become the world’s largest marketplace for stock photos, and it now has a huge number of monthly visitors – all of whom are potential customers for your photos.

Shutterstock

Selling Photos 3
Since launching, Shutterstock has paid out over $350 million to its contributors. When you upload a photo to the marketplace, you still keep copyright, and can earn up to 30% of the sale price of your photos depending on the size of your image. Currently, the payout is between $0.25 and $28 per sale.

iStock Photo

Selling Photos 4
iStock Photo is a great place for those just starting out selling stock photos. Its popular forums and resources will help you to find your feet, and to understand the world of photo sales.

The standard royalty payout for iStock Photo starts at only 15% per download, but this can increase to 45% depending on the popularity of your photos. If a customer purchases a photo using one of the subscription “credits” however, royalty rates are 15% by default.

If you’re willing to sell your photos exclusively on iStock Photo, the site will thank you by offering 22-45% royalties. This exclusivity contract can be ended if you give the company 30 days notice.

PhotoShelter

Selling Photos 5
If you want to sell your photos, but would rather make those sales through your own site, PhotoShelter is a great tool for this. At its core, it’s a photography-oriented e-commerce platform that you can integrate into almost any website. This includes cloud storage for your photos, an intuitive interface, decent SEO (search engine optimization), and several social media integrations.

The benefits of this option include retaining full control over how your photos are displayed, not having your competitors photos displayed alongside your own, and the ability earn much more of the sale price. A couple of other similar alternatives are Fotomoto and Pixpa.

Fotolia

Selling Photos 6
With over 4 million buyers, Adobe’s Fotolia is a beautiful site that offers royalties of between 20-46%. These royalties are deposited into your account immediately, unlike with many other sites where you have to wait to reach a threshold, or payments are made every 30 days.

The site has been in operation for over 10 years, and now houses over 45 million images. Relatively recently it was integrated into several of Adobe’s software packages, including Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign. This means that when you upload a photo to Fotolia, it’s also added to Adobe Stock, so people can buy your photos directly from within those applications.

PhotoMoolah

Selling Photos 7
If you want a different way of selling your photos, try PhotoMoolah. This is a site where you can submit relevant photos to different contests. If your photo is picked as one of the winners, you get paid while retaining your rights. The site isn’t yet massively popular, meaning there’s less competition for aspiring photographers.

As a couple of examples, there’s currently a contest looking for photos of “Australian and European kids playing outdoors”, offering a prize of $200. There’s another looking for “Unique selfie shots in Singapore”, where you could also win $200. Prizes have been known to go up to $500, but most are $100-200.

SmugMug

Selling Photos 8
The SmugMug “Pro” package is an alternative to PhotoShelter. The platform enables you to showcase your work on a massively customizable storefront, and to manage your orders.

The main distinguishing feature is the ability to use the SimplyMug labs to offer prints, books, and greetings cards created from your shots. There are additional features such as the ability to create coupons, photo packages, and built-in analytics. You’ll also get to keep up to 85% of your revenue.

Can Stock Photo

Selling Photos 9
If you’re looking for an easy option for selling your photos, Can Stock Photo is a great choice. You will need to be approved first, which is a simple process where you have to submit three images to the site’s editors. You’ll usually have a response within 24 hours.

When uploading photos (you can upload several hundred at once) onto the site, the metadata and keyword data is read automatically, saving you the pain of needing to categorize each photo. You can earn up to 50% in royalties on the site, and can withdraw your money into PayPal once your balance reaches $50. If you want a mailed check, you’ll have to wait until you have $100.

123RF

Selling Photos 10
This site has over 45 million files on offer, with almost half a million being added each week. The royalties payable vary between 30% and 60% depending on your level of contribution. This means that the more photos you upload, the higher your payout.

If you upload less than 250 images to the site, you’ll earn 30%, which equates to $0.216 per download. If you upload over 1 million images, you’ll receive 60%, which equates to $0.432 per download.

Dreamstime

Selling Photos 11
In the stock photography world, Dreamstock is a reputable player. It achieved this status by ensuring that all uploads are reviewed to check they meet their standards “technically, aesthetically and commercially”, thereby guaranteeing quality.

Once your photos are approved, you’ll receive royalties of 25-50%, though this could increase to 60% on all images if you sign an exclusivity contract. If you do sign that exclusivity deal, you’ll also receive an additional bonus of $0.20 for each approved submission. The sale price of each photo is based on the number of times it has been downloaded.

FineArtAmerica

Selling Photos 12
FineArtAmerica is the perfect place to set up an alluring portfolio, and to sell physical prints of your shots. You can sell each photo as a canvas print, poster, framed print, metal print, acrylic print, or greetings card. The Best Website Builders to Create a Clean Online Portfolio Having an online portfolio is critical for today's digital worker.    If you’re able to produce your own prints, there are also a number of craft websites which you may be interested in using as a selling platform.

Snapped4U

Selling Photos 14
If you’re a photographer who takes photos at events — parties, gigs, festivals, weddings etc. — Snapped4U is a website that makes the sale of those photos extremely simple. It’s also a great way to use the sales of photos to raise money for good causes. By uploading and selling your photos here, you don’t need to deal with the nightmare of order processing, printing, and postage. Snapped4U deals with all of that on your behalf.

The cost to you for each photo sold is just $0.50 on photos that are priced $5 or less. If the photo is sold at more than $5, Snapped4U will charge a 10% commission.

Where Else Do You Sell Photos?

There are plenty of other websites out there where you can sell your photos. The ones included here are those that either offer something different, are highly reputable, or who offer fantastic royalties to contributing photographers.

As you improve your photography skills, and learn to understand the photos that sell well (and those that don’t), your forays into this territory should, in time, become more lucrative.

8 Quick Ways To Make Money From Home

Anyone who has ever googled “work from home” or “make money from home” knows that the web is overflowing with sites proclaiming you can make thousands from the comfort of your living room, most of the time requiring you to first buy a book, CD, or DVD to learn how.  Since there is so much of this garbage out there, it can be frustrating looking for legitimate ways to work from home.  Below are some reasonable ideas to consider.

None of these will make you rich, but they’re good options for putting some extra cash in your wallet.

  • Direct Sales Home Businesses – Host “parties” at your home to get discounts and a little cash, or become an independent sales rep yourself to make even more money.  Many of them offer online shops that you can set up under your name.  Some of the most popular ones are:   Avon, Mary Kay, Tupperware, Thirty-One Gifts, or Pampered Chef; there are also numerous companies selling candles, jewelry, children’s books, children’s clothes, etc.)
  • Have an eBay “Garage Sale” – Scour your house from top to bottom for unused items.  Open up a shop on eBay (it’s free), take pictures of your items and let the bidding begin.  You will also get the added benefit of de-cluttering your house!

  • Tutor (In-home or Online) – There is always a need for tutors at any grade level.  You can do this out of your home, or find one of the many opportunities to do it online.

  • Online Surveys – There are tons of sites online that pay you to fill out surveys so they can obtain market data, just make sure the site is free!

  • Dog Walking/Pet Sitting – Dog owners always need someone to walk their dog on a busy work day or pet sit overnight when away on vacation or business.  Research the local pet care companies in your area to review the services they offer.  You may even start off by working for one of them as you get your feet wet.

  • Babysit Kids in Your Home – Many parents are looking for lower cost alternatives to daycare; consider sitting a couple of kids in your home!  If you have your own kids at home, there is the added benefit of playtime and socialization with your kids.

  • Freelance Writing – If you have a flair for writing, there many freelance writer opportunities available such as writing technical or marketing pieces; or articles for journals, newspapers, or magazines.  You can also get paid to write blog articles for various websites like the Yahoo Contributor network, for example.

  • Start a Home Business– Stick with your talents or what you love to do.  Consider these:
Photography; start a small photography business

Crafts; start a shop on Etsy selling your handmade products

Sewing; be a seamstress or sell your  handmade clothing items on Etsy

Baking; start a small cake baking business
Source

Party planning; start small with birthday parties, etc. and maybe eventually expand into larger events like weddings!

Music; based on your talent (piano, voice, guitar, etc.), offer music lessons out of your home

There are some legitimate home-based jobs that you can find online, such as being a Virtual assistant or a Customer Service Rep.  Just be sure not to sign up for anything that requires any kind of upfront fee.  RatRaceRebellion.com and FlexJobs.com are also fantastic places to start the search for work from home gigs.

'I quit work to sell my crafts online - and net £20,000 salary'

Could you make a career out of selling home made knicknacks online? Meet craftmaker Kate Broughton who gave up an unfulfilling job to sell on social media sites Etsy, Twitter and Facebook

It’s an ordinary work day for Kate Broughton, who is sticking bird seeds on to greetings cards from her home in West Yorkshire village, Otley.
These are no slapdash home-made creations. The cards are part of a growing business that Miss Broughton created from scratch. The knick-knacks she creates, also including nail stickers, bird and bee prints, buttons and badges, now earn her £20,000 a year – and that’s after expenses, materials and tax.
“I’ve just started a bird collection for Christmas. I illustrate the front of the cards with robins and staple a handful of seeds inside which you can see through the front of the cards,” she said.
Miss Broughton, 32, who worked in a Nottingham bookshop before turning to full-time craftmaking in 2011, said her career change was “weirdly unexpected” and came after posting photos of her products online.
It was only when she began selling her £2.50 cards and £3 nail stickers using online marketplace Etsy that she realised her hobby could turn into a lucrative business.
She had taken the bookselling job after graduating in textile design from Nottingham, and began by selling cards and nail transfer stickers at fairs during her spare time. “Once I finished university, I had no idea what I wanted to do,” she said.

“I’d only made the nail stickers the night before I set up the Etsy shop. As soon as I put them online, they went crazy,” she said.

Miss Broughton said she now tailors her products to their popularity online and customers who write in with specific requests. “I had people writing to me all the time asking to do cocktail designs.”

“The next thing I know, I was making cocktails on everything – cards, nails, prints.”

Miss Broughton advises other would-be craftmakers to set up a website to find out which products sell. It costs her just £1 to set up the webpage and a few pence per listing.
Miss Broughton advised craftmakers to set up a website to find out which products sell

One year into selling online, she began getting offers from shops across the world to stock her home-made goods. “My first sale was to a shop in Canada who bought these animal brooches. I stopped making them when I realised they took too long to make.”

Miss Broughton moved into part-time work before quitting her job completely. “I used to work in the evenings, but I was really struggling to keep up with orders and realised I had not been able to think of new designs for a while.”

She moved back to her Yorkshire hometown three years ago. “When you leave university you think you have to go to London and get a job,” she said.
“Then suddenly I was working for myself.”

Miss Broughton receives a handful of orders a day on average, but said that every work day is different. “If something does well on the Facebook or Twitter page, I often can’t predict it. It happened recently with badges so I asked some friends to help me out.”

Miss Broughton advised anyone with a penchant for crafts to set up a shop online. “It’s zero risk, it costs a few pence to list items, and if things don’t sell you try something different.”

She has no current plans to employ extra help. “I like how it is at the moment, and I like being in control – whether it’s the designs or the easy jobs like packing and posting,” she said.

'Our shop cost us £1 and now we make £20,000’

Karli and Jacques working on their dinosaur jewellery from home

Couple Jacques Keogh, 27, and Karli Dendy, 26, started selling dinosaur crafts through Etsy after struggling to find design jobs since graduating from Sussex University.

The pair, still based in Brighton, have made and sold thousands of dinosaur-themed bracelets, baubles, earrings and more through the shopping site.

“We’ve branched out a bit from our Triceratops designs, but find the dinosaur creations really popular,” Miss Dendy said.

The shop, which turns over £20,000 a year, now gets around 500 views a day and achieves 15 sales a week. “I’ve given up work but Jacques still works in a bar. We hope as the business grows that we can both go full time,” Miss Dendy said.

Miss Dendy said the shop had bagged them invites to take part in pop-up shops, craft fairs and 30 stockists in Britain and worldwide.

“We know that some people want to buy in real life, so we try to get our crafts into shops too.”

How to sell your home-made crafts online

You may be a genius at turning some glue and paper into a craft, but online sellers should be business-minded, too.

Retail expert Clare Rayner, author of The Retail Champion: 10 Steps to Retail Success, said: “It’s vital to appreciate legalities like good regulation, if you should be a limited company, and if you need product liability insurance.

“If a customer clams they were injured by one of your products, you could lose everything you’ve built up.”

Get professional advice before investing your savings in the business, in order to find out the costs of accounting structures and insurance costs.

Another pitfall is undervaluing your products. Ms Rayner said: “Consider your time in making crafts, how many years it took to develop your skills, and the surplus of running a business.”

To work out pricing, find out what similar goods are selling for and ensure you are pocketing enough after costs to earn a fair wage.

You neither do any physical work nor spend countless hours in front of your PC. The task is simple; you write your opinion of a product, which you are using or have used in the past.

Users, who buy a product and use it for months [possibly years,] can provide excellent feedback. Such feedback is priceless for new costumers and that is why, many companies will pay you lots of cash to share your experience by writing an online product review.

Electronics, like a dishwasher, washing machine, juicer, computer hardware, and books are some common items users write reviews for. If you look around your room right now, you definitely can see many such items that are worthy of writing a review about. You are probably using a PC, a Laptop, an iPad or a similar device to read the content of this webpage; you can write a review about the device you are using[at this moment] or write about any other device, which you have used and tested in the past.

Make cash from writing reviews

Along with the usual perks, product reviewing also has a bonus feature. It enables you to receive electronic equipment for free; companies send different items to reviewers for free. So testers get both the product and payment for the review. However, this reward is only available for those who have proved themselves as trustworthy reviewers.

You can also review other items such as websites. This product testing job requires you to comment on website design, quality of content, ease of use etc. It does not include usability testing; that is a separate job.

The length of reviews are in the following range; 100 to 350 words. A short but useful review can outweigh a poorly written 500 words review. Therefore, companies prefer quality over quantity; and as a result, they ask reviewers to write short but effective product reviews.

Listed below are few websites where you can get these testing jobs:
